REEPS Workshop 2 After the Fire: From the Ashes

  • The Burn Site 9815 Hwy 6, BC (just north of Enterprise Creek) (map)

Fire is both destroyer and creator, purifier and healer. Join us in the heart of the Slocan Valley as we visit two sites impacted by the 2024 wildfires, where devastation has given way to new growth and green hope rising from the ashes. This immersive field day will explore post-fire landscapes and the practical restoration techniques that help ecosystems recover naturally.

Participants will discuss wildfire impacts and regeneration, firebreak rehabilitation, and restoration methods that work with natural regeneration rather than against it. Topics will also include understanding soil pH changes after fire and their effects on the soil biome, using solarization for invasive species management, identifying shade pockets for regrowth, and evaluating standing dead trees as both ecological assets and safety concerns.

Climate-adaptive water strategies will also be explored, including wetland restoration, water conservation, and water collection and retention techniques for restoring post-fire landscapes. Together, we can restore hope, resilience, and community.
