ERC’s Pollinator Highway Stewardship Program
Our vision with the Pollinator Highway Stewardship program is to develop and support a community-driven initiative that revitalises native pollinator populations in the Slocan Valley. We’re inviting our community to help transform degraded or under utilized spaces, into vibrant, pollinator-friendly habitats filled with native flowering plants.
PHASE 1 - From Degraded Roadside to Thriving Habitat
Three years ago we installed pollinator habitat plots along the roadside in front of Elk Root Conservation Farm. After three years of care, maintenance and data collection, we have successfully completed Phase One of this project. This site, once degraded and overrun with invasive weeds, has been transformed into a thriving landscape of hundreds of native, pollinator-friendly plants that support a rich diversity of pollinators from bees to butterflies.
Learning and Sharing Best Practices
Throughout phase 1, we trialled a range of land-management and plant-establishment techniques. This work has given us an evidence-based understanding of the practices that best support healthy native pollinator plots in our region.
We are now using what we have learned to develop educational resources for the Pollinator Highway Stewardship Program. These tools will help future stewards confidently establish and care for their own pollinator plots.
PHASE 2: Expanding into our Community
Become a Steward!
Do you live in the Slocan Valley or Passmore region, or represent a local business or organization? We’re looking for community members and organizations interested in being stewards of a pollinator habitat plot and becoming part of this growing initiative.
Future stewards will receive boots-on-the-ground guidance, practical support, and education from the experts at Elk Root Conservation. Together, we can turn roadside and other under utilised spaces into connected networks of native habitat that support our pollinators and overall biodiversity.
